Earth, Wind & Fire has become one of the most musically talented, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the '70s. The group achieved such monumental success because of the musical roots of founder Maurice White; the development of key players like Philip Bailey and Verdine White; and the pivotal role of the late Charles Stepney as arranger and co-producer on a number of the group's groundbreaking mid-seventies albums. Working with actor Jim Brown, who co-owned a management company, EW&F began making the rounds, playing clubs throughout L.A. The group's debut LP yielded a light hit in the form of "Love is Life" in July 1971. A second LP The Need Of Love was released in early '72. A single, "I Think About Lovin' You" provided EW&F with a Top 40 r&b hit. With the same line-up, the group began touring, playing mostly for college audiences. Clive Davis bought the group's contract from Warner Brothers and in the spring of 1972, Earth Wind &Fire headed to the studio to record Last Days And Time, their CBS debut. The album did extraordinarily well considering the group was still developing a following, over time hitting the gold mark. College radio played an important part in breaking EW&F. The group headed back to the studio in the winter of 1973 to record Head To The Sky. The album yielded the group's first two legitimate hit singles: "Evil," co-written by Maurice and Philip; and the title track, "Keep Your Head To The Sky," both top 30 R&B and top 60 pop charters. On the heels of Head To The Sky came Open Your Eyes, the group's first platinum album. Midway through 1979, EW&F topped the dance music charts in a song produced by Maurice and Al McKay, "Boogie Wonderland".

Released in the autumn of 1980, the album proved to be a relative commercial disappointment, reaching only gold status. EW&F headed back to the studios to records the double-platinum Raise. In 1989, after giving international audiences an opportunity to hear their string of hits once more, EW&F headed back to the studio for their last Columbia album, Heritage. In late 1991, Earth, Wind & Fire returned to Warner Brothers to record "Millennium". The "Millennium" album brought another Grammy nomination in 1994, their fourteenth to date, for the single "Sunday Morning." 1997 saw the release of "In The Name of Love", which was easily one of Earth, Wind & Fire's best-received records in over a decade. On August 21, 2001, the group released their brand new documentary called, "Shining Stars: The Official Story", on VHS and DVD. This film documentary chronicles the last thirty-years of the group. In September, of 2001, Earth, Wind & Fire launched a new worldwide tour.
