At the Copa- the best of Barry Manilow was performed by Guest Conductor Piotr Gajewski and Gary Mauer. The vision behind the concert was to mesh popular and classical music. No better way to blend both than to take inspiration from the music of the great Barry Manilow, who after 3 decades still performs to sell-out shows. Tickets were very hard to get. The orchestra performed Mandy, I Write the Songs, Could It Be Magic, among others. Markand Thakar conducts another concert, "Kathy Mattea". Ms. Mattea is one of the most accomplished names in country music. The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra celebrates the beauty and unique singing style of Kathy Mattea. In "Peace and Love, Baby", Mr. Thakar conducts the orchestra who musically explores some of the most significant moments of American history (Civil Rights movement, war at Vietnam, Watergate, the beat movement etc). The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra has also performed Mozart – Symphony No. 34 in C Major, K. 338 (Allegro Vivace | Andante di molto pieu tosto Allegretto | Allegro Vivace), Bloch - Schelomo (Amit Peled, cello), Copland John Henry Brahms Concerto for Violin & Cello, ( Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 (Organ), Beethoven - Symphony No. 5, Takemitsu - Archipelago S, Copland - Third Symphony, Strauss – A Hero's Life (Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40), Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 5 "Emperor" (Joseph Kalichstein, piano), Bruch - Romance for Viola and Orchestra, Op. 85 – Nicole Swanson, viola, Barber - Night Flight to name a few. Markand Thakar is the music director and inspirational conductor of the orchestra. His brilliant programming concept and innovative thinking has reflected in Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra's continuous star performances. Mr. Thakar, is a regular performer at the Aspen Music Festival. His career's highlights have been performing with Yo-Yo Ma and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Others include appearing with Itzhak Perlman and the Boulder Philharmonic. Mr. Thakar is a recipient of the Geraldine C. and Emory M. Ford Foundation Award.
