Dream Theater is a progressive rick band formed in 1985. It was formed by some students of the Berklee College of Music. Initially they began with the name Mirage and consisted of students Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy. Dream Theater got a two more members with the inclusion of keyboard player Kevin Moore and vocalist Chris Collins.
They released their first demo titled "Majesty Demo," and sold 1,000 copies within six months. In 1986, Chris Collins quit the band and Dream Theater were without a vocalist for a long time. The band finally found a vocalist in November 1987, in the form of Charlie Dominici. They also changed their name to avoid confusion with a similarly named band that was performing at the Mirage hotel and casino in Las Vegas. The group contemplated a name change and finally decided on Dream Theater, inspired by a now-demolished California movie theater. The group signed up with Mechanic Records and started working on their first full-length album. Numerous delays by the label caused the band to perform at small clubs and bars. As their patience grew thin, the band eventually left Mechanic Records.

The band continued to be plagued by personnel changes. Vocalist Charlie Dominici was fired from the group and the vocalist position remained vacant for the next couple of years. Their prayers were finally answered in 1991 when they auditioned Canadian vocalist Kevin James LaBrie. They were impressed and invited LaBrie to join the band. Dream Theater the signed with record label, Atco Atlantic, and released its second album, "Images & Words," in 1992. They consolidated their position with their third studio album, "Awake," recorded in 1994. But Dream Theater's personnel problem continued to trouble them. Before "Awake" could be mixed, keyboardist Moore left the group to focus on his solo career. Derek Sherinian was hired by the band for their Waking up the World tour, and became a permanent member. His first recording with Dream Theater was a 23-minute epic, "A Change of Seasons," written in 1989. It was later released in September 1995 on an album by the same name.
The members of Dream Theater separated for a few months after their mini tour, Fix for '96,and became involved with a variety of outside projects. Dream Theater underwent another change in 1999, when they fired Derek Sherinian. He was replaced by Rudess. The band released their next album, "Scenes From a Memory." The album played a major role in establishing the band's progressive rock image. Dream Theater continued their progressive metal genre with their fifth album, "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence," in 2002. This was followed by "Leaner Train of Thought" in 2003. The band released their most recent album in 2005 titled "Octavarium."
