In 1983, the band was left with only one frontman after Sawyer left the band to pursue a solo career. The band continued to tour which finally ended with only one frontman Dennis Locorriere, in Dr. Hook's One and Only Farewell Tour. In the 1990s, Sawyer toured as "Dr. Hook featuring Ray Sawyer." Artist Biography - Dr Hook
Formed in Union City, New Jersey in 1968, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show consisted of four friends from the south. Before spending studio time, they sold tickets for many live performances throughout the "Transfer Station", an area conspicuous with its bars and restaurants. Their music sounds like CCR and other bands with some folk tale quality to it.
The band ended up in New Jersey on the invite of George Cummings, their founding band member. Cummings named the band "Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show: Tonic for the Soul" inspired by traveling medicine shows of the olden days. During their first two years, drummer Popeye Phillips, a session drummer on The Flying Burrito Brothers' first album played with them. Phillips was replaced by Joey Olivieri who was further replaced by John "Jay" David. In 1970, Ron Haffkine, musical director of the Dustin Hoffman starrer, "Who is Harry Kellerman and Why is he saying those terrible things about me?" heard their demo tapes. Shel Silverstein, a famed cartoonist and poet who was writing songs for the movie considered Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show as the ideal band for the soundtrack. Dennis Locorriere sang several songs for the movie, out of which "Last Morning", the movie's theme song was later recorded in their band's sophomore album, "Sloppy Seconds". The band met with Clive Davis, legendary CBS head where Sawyer, Locorriere and Cummings played and sang a few songs, Francis jumped up and danced about on Clive Davis's desk and Drummer Jay used a wastepaper bin to keep the beat. Impressed with the impromptu performance, the CBS honcho signed up the boys. In 1971, guitarist Cummings, singer Sawyer, keyboard player Billy Francis, drummer David and singer/guitarist Dennis Locorriere released their self-titled debut record. With the album, the band had their first hit "Sylvia's mother". In 1972, the band lineup changed with the addition of guitarist, Rik Elswit and bassist, Jance Garfat. In 1973, John Wolters replaced David who quit the group. In 1975, Cummings left the band due to personal and artistic differences. A few years later, Elswit was diagnosed with cancer and in his place came Bob "Willard" Henke (formerly of Goose Creek Symphony). Elswit returned after his recovery but Willard stayed. Eventually, Willard left and the band added Rod Smarr. Due to some company policy, the BBC refused to play "Cover of a Rolling Stone". The song was re-released as "Cover of Radio Times" after which it reached cult-status. In 1976, "A Little Bit More" from the album with the same name was a hit. Hits like "Sharing the Night Together", "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman" and "Sexy Eyes" save for "A Little Bit More" and the cover of Sam Cooke's "Only Sixteen" were certified million-sellers.
