Donna the Buffalo is an original American roots-rock band. The band have left their indelible musical footprints on the stages of clubs, theaters and festivals across the country. Their music is funky and groovy and always comes with an underlying message or philosophy. Donna the Buffalo has developed their own unique sound, which is a mix of reggae, rock, cajun, country, zydeco and folk.

Donna the Buffalo formed in 1987 in Ithaca, New York. The group started out with the triplet of vocalists - Tara Nevins, who plays fiddle, guitar, and accordion; guitarist Jeb Puryear, and keyboardist Joe Thrift. They added another dimension to their band by adding guitarist Jim Miller, drummer Tom Gilbert, and bassist Jed Greenberg. After months of jamming privately, the band were offered to make their first public performance at the now defunct Cabbage Town Coffee House in Ithaca.
Almost immediately, Donna the Buffalo started touring extensively, something they have kept up even today. Donna the Buffalo a regular attraction at festivals like Merlefest and Telluride. The group has also performed on stage with artists like 10,000 Maniacs, Los Lobos, and Rusted Root. The followers of the group are popularly known as 'The Herd'. Donna the Buffalo primarily plays in the Midwest and on the East Coast of the United States.

As their popularity grew the band released their debut CD commonly known as "The Purple One." The hunger for the band's new tunes increased and they self released their next album, "The Ones You Love" in 1996. For their next offering, the band tied up with with Sugar Hill Records. They released "Rockin' In the Weary Land" in 1998 and won the AIM award for Best Rock Album.

Extending their partnership with Sugar Hill, they released Positive Friction in 2000 and started to appear on national radio charts. The group then returned to their own label Wildlife Music to release the double-disc "Live from the American Ballroom" in 2001. Two years later the band performed as the backing band for alt-country musician Jim Lauderdale on the album "Wait Til Spring," released on Skycrunch Records. Their latest album "Life's a Ride," was released by Reincarnate Music in 2005.

The band's lyrics are based on topics that range from political and historical to personal and spiritual. Their sings also discuss ideas of social and moral responsibility and are also part of the band's core beliefs. The band just don't preach, they practice as well. They are the organizers and driving force behind the Finger Lakes Grass Roots Festival that is staged in Trumansburg, NY. The event benefits AIDS programs and art education throughout the upstate area. The 1998 event attracted over 7,000 people for 4 days of music.
