Gone are the days when mentioning surfing and music together reminded of early 60s. All thanks to artists like Donavon Frankenreiter. Born on December 10, 1972, in Downey, California Donavon Frankenreiter knew his way around a wave at a very young age. Donavon pursued a professional career in surfing when he got a sponsor, Billabong at the age of 13. The pursuit took him to Hawaii a year later. There he took a home on rent from Jack Johnson's parents. Jack and Donavon eventually became good friends. They surfed and took their guitar lessons together.

Music always interested Donavon. At the age of 18, he started playing in Peanut Butter and Jam. But it was not until 2001 that he thought of taking music as a career. Johnson's musical career had reached it's peak by then. In 2002, he signed with Brushfire Records and recorded his first album with Johnson as co-producer with Mario Caldato Jr. With guest spots from Johnson, G. Love, and Koool G Murder of the Eels, Frankenreiter's Donavon Frankenreiter debut appeared on Brushfire in May of 2004. The album was released in April 2004 in Australia owing to his high profile there. He toured Australia in April 2004 with Gary Jules as his album reached the top-40 of the Australian album charts. Recently, Frankenreiter has also been working with Jose Medeles of The Breeders.

In 2006, his song "Lovely Day" was featured during the opening sequence of the film Snakes on a Plane. The song also appears on the movie's soundtrack. Frankenreiter broke from his mentor's label and went to Lost Highway for the release of his follow-up album Move by Yourself which was released on June 6, 2006. The album has plenty sonic mood swings with absolute evenness of spirit.
Donavon carries a very zestful approach to life. "The reality is that surfing is my first love," he declares. "For a long time, it was my life -- I made a living at it starting when I was 16 years old, and it took me all a round the world. But it's vastly different than doing music. If I call up a buddy to surf, there can be a moment of clarity, but if I get a wave that's really incredible and try to convey that feeling to someone else, they may not be able to relate. But my wife -- or anyone -- can see me on stage playing and really feel what I'm feeling. It's magical, there's so much togetherness."

His optimism is reflected aptly whether he is relating his feelings about his child ("These Arms") or simply waking up to greet the new dawn ("Beautiful Day"). "It's a totally positive thing for me," Frankenreiter explains himself. "I've talked to people who've asked ‘why don't you write more depressing songs? Sure, I have bad days like anyone else, but mostly, I feel lucky. When I pick up a guitar, I feel good. It makes me want to open a bottle of wine and have a party, and that's what I'd like people to feel when they listen to my music"
