There are very few bands which hail from far away countries and still make a thumping mark in the music arena. Dimmu Borgir popularly pronounced as "Di-moo bore-gear is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band. Dimmu Borgir is very popular and famous in several Scandinavian countries and Germany. Literally Dimmu Borgir means Dark City/Citadel/Castle/Fortress located in Icelandic and also it is the name of an area of lava formations close to Mývatn, a lake in Iceland.
This powerful band was officially formed in 1993 by Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv. And soon after the formation in 1994, the band released their EP entitled Inn I Evighetens Mørke. Which was translated to English and the title meant Into The Darkness of Eternity. This EP was a superb hit and was sold within few weeks, soon sensing this success the band followed up with the full length album For All Tid released in 1994. This album too featured musical contributions by members of Dødheimsgard and Ved Buens Ende. The most interesting part was that Shagrath played drums with Tjodalv on guitar and Erkekjetter Silenoz covering vocals. But soon this line-up was changed in 1996, prior the release of Stormblåst, translates to "Storm Blown on Cacophonous Records. And also it was the last album which featured all lyrics written and sung in Norwegian.
After the Stormblåst, band's music career took a sharp turn as band's leading keyboardist Stian Aarstad left the band due to his obligation to serve in the Swedish army. This is the reason why he wasn't the part of the album Devil's Path in 1996. Later, Brynjard Tristan band's lead bassist also left the band. His exit marked the entrance of Nagash. Later in 1997 Stian Aarstad also returned for the recording of Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. After the recording they went to world tour to support and popularize their album but Stian Aarstad had trouble attending rehearsals and tour dates, and he was fired from the band. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant was a huge success for the band, and it was their first release signed to the famous German record label Nuclear Blast.

Lately, in 2005 the band finished their re-recording of the Stormblåst album, featuring Mayhem member Hellhammer as the session drummer.
