Diamond Rio began its ascend to stardom as the Tennessee River Boys, playing at the Opryland USA theme park in Nashville in the early 1980s. After numerous personnel changes, it set into its present group in 1989 and took the name Diamond Rio. The group signed with the newly-formed Arista Nashville label the following year, and their self-titled debut album was released in 1991 and quickly became a platinum-selling smash. It reached No. 1 with its first single, "Meet in the Middle." .
