Until 1919, the old Detroit Opera House was the performance house of the DSO. It was only with the appointment of Ossip Gabrilowitsch as a music director in 1918, a new auditorium namely "Orchestra Hall" was built. Ossip Gabrilowitsch made it clear that unless he gets a new auditorium, he won't accept the position. The Orchestra moved to the Ford Auditorium on the waterfront of the Detroit River in the year 1956. For 33 years, the DSO remained in that venue. Later it moved to a renovated orchestra hall that was equipped with better acoustics.
