Born in Kingston, Jamaica, on July 16, 1942, Dekker was orphaned in his teens. He apprenticed as a welder in order to earn of his own. Dekker used to sing around the workshop and it was his workmates who first noted his vocal talents. With their encouragement, Desmond Dekker auditioned for Coxsone Dodd at Studio One and Duke Reid at Treasure Isle in 1961. But no one payed heed to his talents. Yet, Dekker was not disheartened. He next tried his luck with the owner of the Beverley's label, Leslie Kong. Dekker auditioned in front of Derrick Morgan, the stable's biggest hitmaker and was immediately recognized by him. But it took almost two years for Dekker to show his singing talents.
In 1963, Dacres sang Honour Your Father and Mother for Kong. Kong was heavily influenced and came to know that the wait had been worth it. Just after the release of the song, Dekker's popularity grew by leaps and bounds. The song's soul touching message helped it soar the top of the Jamaican charts. After the success of this song, Dekker came out with more compositions like "Sinners Come Home" and "Labour for Learning,". These were also great hits. However, it was with the release of "King of Ska," Dekker's mettle was truly established.

In 1963, Dekker formed his own backing group called "The Aces". "The Aces" included Wilson James and various siblings from the Howard family, including Carl, Barry, Clive and Patrick.In 1967, the group recorded 007 (Shanty Town) which became an instant hit and made entry to the UK chart at # 14. From 1967 to 1970, the band gave several hits which included Rudie Got Soul, Rude Boy Train, Sabotage, Later It Make, and You Can Get It If You Really Want. In the meantime, Dekker performed at many concerts throughout England and became tremendously popular.
In 1968 Dekker's "Israelites" was released. It appeared on both the UK and US singles charts and eventually topped both the charts. Moreover he performed live in the USA also. He was unarguably the first Jamaican performer to enter the U.S. Market scenario with pure Jamaican music. That same year some of Dekker's other works were also released. These were : "Music Like Dirt", "Beautiful and Dangerous," "Bongo Girl" "Writing on the Wall," and "Shing a Ling."
During the 1970s Dekker signed with Stiff Records and recorded an album named "Black and "White".This album featured some of his earlier hits. In 1990, he released a new version of his earlier release "Israelites". Besides, he re-recorded some of his old singles and worked with The Specials for 1992's King of kings.
On May 25, 2006 Despond Dekker died of a heart attack in London. He was 64 at the age of his death. His death is undoubtedly a tremendous loss to the musical world.
