DC Talk is a very famous and well known Christian rock band created in the late 1980s at Lynchburg, Virginia. The band was a huge success in the start itself and went on to become a hugely popular band of the years to come. The band consisted of founder members, Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait and Kevin Max. The band began as a hip hop grouping, but later in the mid 1990's it re invented themselves into a pop rock group. The most important aspect was that in both instances, the band found both critical and commercial success. This was true for both the Christian music industry and for the general market as well.
The band's history goes back to the late 1980s, at that time rapper and vocalist Toby McKeehan (Toby Mac) began to write Christian hip hop songs under the name Cauca talk. At the same time as he was attending Liberty University, Toby met vocalists Kevin Max Smith (Kevin Max) and Michael Tait, and thus they decided to form a band and named it dc Talk. The name is a short form for Decent Christian Talk. The justification for the name can be found in the lines of the song "Time Ta Jam" part of their self titled debut album.
It was in year 1989 that the group released their debut self-titled album. The album was released on Fore Front Records. The band gained some tremendous success when the music video of "Heaven bound" received airplay on the famous BET network. Their follow up album to DC talk was in year 1990. It was named Nu Thang, and also managed to receive attention for its mix of hip hop and pop stylings (courtesy M.C. Hammer and Fresh Prince).

Their third release was in year 1992 and was called "Free at Last". It was a marvelous success, managing to produce six Christian radio hits. The album was appreciated for its innovative amalgamation of musical genres. The album had combined hip hop with rock, pop and gospel.
However dc talk's greatest achievement was their fourth album which was released in year 1995. It was very differently named as "Jesus Freak". On this occasion dc talk had re invented themselves as a pop and rock act, with almost little or no hip hop in their new album. This made them their music in the league similar to Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers or U2 than to M.C. Hammer. The album has been referred to as one of the milestones in the Christian music scenario, having sold more than 2 million copies. This initiated a spree of tours on the list of dc Talk starting with "The Freak Show. Their latest album called Supernatural was released in the year 1998 and was a moderate success.
