David Gates
David Gates is an acclaimed singer/songwriter, keyboardist and producer. His first success came as a songwriter, he wrote the popular Murmaids song "Popsicles and Icicles." He was also the front man of the band Bread. Gates was born and raised in Tulsa, OK. His father was a band director and his mother was a piano teacher. Music was part of his life from the very beginning. By the time he reached his teenage years he could proficiently play the piano, bass and guitar. He dreamed of becoming an artist one day. His dreams materialized when he received a musical break in 1957 from Chuck Berry. Gates first hit was the song "Jo-Baby," with Chuck Berry.
His family shifted to Los Angeles in 1961 and Gates began his musical odyssey. He started writing songs and producing, by the '60s he had worked with some of the biggest names in the music business, including artists like Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin and Merle Haggard. He also produced the 1965 Glenn Yarbrough hit "Baby the Rain Must Fall."

But Gates wanted to be bigger and more successful He understood that the only way to realize this was to sing and perform himself. Thus he formed the band "Bread" in 1968. The members of the group apart from Gates were James Griffin, Robb Royer, and later, drummer Michael Botts and keyboardist Larry Krechtel. The band released their debut self titled album in 1969.The band got more success and praise when they released their second album, "Manna," in 1971.
The band released more albums in the following years, namely "Guitar Man" and "Baby, I'm a Want You." As the band grew and gained more success the members disbanded looking for their own individual place in the limelight. The band disintegrated in 1973 , although they reformed in 1977 and released the album "Lost Without Your Love." David Gates also continued churning out his own albums like "First Album" and "Never Let Her Go." Currently, David Gates continues to write and produce in his own studio at his California ranch.
