Dan Rather is a famous American journalist born on Oct. 31, 1931 in Wharton, Texas. His stint with journalism began with editing his college newspaper, The Houstonian. His journalistic venture started with being stationed in Huntsville, Texas as a reporter with the Associated Press in 1950. Later he also worked with the United Press International and several radio stations along with a score of other newspapers like The Houston Chronicle.

The CBS network, hired him in 1962, after his impressive coverage of Hurricane Carla, which threatened the Texan coastline. His coverage of the Kennedy assassination was also one of the best amidst a time when the communications system wasn't as hi-tech as today's. This coverage won him the appointment as a White House correspondent for the CBS network.

His work made him a popular figure especially with his coverage of the civil rights movement, the Watergate scandal and he Vietnam War in the 1960s and 70s. He became a part of the show, 60 minutes, in 1975.

He was also made the host of the CBS Evening News, which was considered the most sought after job and a great platform in American broadcast journalism. He also anchored 48 Hours beginning 1988.
