Common was originally known as Common Sense. He was a very influential figure in rap's underground throughout the '90s. He developed his own style, his lyrics were rich and sophisticated he kept the jazz-rap genre alive in time when gangsta rap was running everything else into oblivion. His style was a little ahead of its time but despite the obstacles he developed a devoted cult following. His albums were praised by critics and he was eventually able to sign with a major label and take his career further.
Common was born as Lonnie Rashied Lynn on the South Side of Chicago. His first major success began with winning The Source magazine's Unsigned Hype contest. He debuted in 1992 with the single "Take It EZ," which appeared on his debut album, Can I Borrow a Dollar?. His other singles "Breaker 1/9" and "Soul by the Pound" strengthened his reputation in the underground scene.
Artist Biography - Common
Common Sense ended his relationship with Ruthless Records after his 1994 release, "Resurrection." The album cemented his place as one of the underground's best. The track "I Used to Love H.E.R." got a lot of attention for its attack on rap's descent into commercially exploitative sex-and-violence subject matter. Common Sense was sued by band using the same name and he had to shorten his name to Common.
Common released his first album under changed name in 1997 titled, "One Day It'll All Make Sense" The album consisted of some great collaborations with hip hop's best including Lauryn Hill, Q-Tip, De La Soul, Erykah Badu, Cee-Lo, and the Roots' Black Thought. The album was very well received and took Common into the Main Stream.
He seemed to be playing his cards right and it proved right when he grabbed a major-label deal with MCA. Roots drummer ?uestlove turned producer of his next project, "Like Water for Chocolate" that was released in early 2000 and became a breakthrough success. It is his most successful album to date. This album had its share of Guest artists like Macy Gray, MC Lyte, Cee-Lo, Mos Def, D'Angelo, jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove, and Afro-beat star Femi Kuti (on a tribute to his legendary father Fela). His single "The Light" earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. His next album and his most personal work to date, "Electric Circus" was released in December 2000 and followed by the 2005 released, "Be."
