Artist Biography - Colorado Symphony Orchestra Beethoven Symphony No 3
On Dec 1-2, 2006, Colorado Symphony Orchestra is playing a performance of most-loved works by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven presenting Douglas Boyd as guest conductor, Julie Albers on cello. This performance will be a tribute to honor three genius composers, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven who defined the Classical style.
The Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major was written by Ludwig van Beethoven. This symphony is best known as the Eroica—Italian for "Heroic" and a work many consider to acclaim the rise of musical Romanticism. This symphony was originally intended by Beethoven to dedicate to Napoleon Bonaparte. He was a great admirer of the ideals of the French Revolution embodied in Napoleon, after Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of the French in May 1804, Beethoven felt so disgusted that he removed Napoleon's name from the title page with such force that he broke his pen and left a ragged hole in the paper. Most of this symphony was written in late 1803 and completed in early 1804. The premiere of symphony was done privately in summer 1804 in Count Lobkowitz's castle Eisenberg. It was made public for the first time in Vienna's Theater an der Wien on April 7, 1805.
The symphony consists of four movements including first Allegro con brio, second; Marcia funebre: Adagio assai, third; Scherzo: Allegro vivace and fourth; Allegro molto. A perfect performance of this symphony lasts between 44 and 55 minutes. A repeat is indicated by Beethoven in the first movement, at the end of the exposition. It was generally removed until the late 1950s, but now it is generally heard.
Just before the recapitulation, a particularly glorious moment in the first movement occurs, when the solo horn enters with the main theme, in slight dissonance with the rest of the instruments, four measures before the "real" entrance. Beethoven's disciple Ferdinand Ries recounted, "The first rehearsal of the symphony was terrible, but the hornist did in fact come in on cue. I was standing next to Beethoven and, believing that he had made a wrong entrance, I said, 'That damned hornist! Can't he count? It sounds frightfully wrong.' I believe I was in danger of getting my ears boxed. Beethoven did not forgive me for a long time."
