CSO plays a key role in making Denver and the Rocky Mountain Region an excellent place to reside, work and raise families. Every season of CSO concerts is attended by approximately 325,000 patrons. The season presents a 21-week Masterworks series of classical programs including Family, Holiday, Pops and Summer Parks concerts.
CSO was founded in 1989 as the successor to the Denver Symphony. It is Colorado's only resident orchestra consisting of professional musicians who play symphonic music on a full-time basis. Besides playing, these musicians actively take part in the management of the organization through significant participation on both ,the Association's Board of Trustees and all governing committees. Marin Alsop had been the leading as music director of CSO for much of the 1990s and 2000s. Currently, Jeffrey Kahane is the conductor for the Colorado Symphony, under whose leadership, CSO has attained a national popularity. CSO will be honoring the great composer Bela Bartok by playing his most famous work "The Wooden Prince".

One of the greatest composers of the 20th century, Béla Bartók wrote the ballet The Wooden Prince in 1914–16 after extreme disappointment over the Fine Arts Commission prize and taking a break of two years. During these years, Bartók preferred to focus on folk music collecting and arranging in the Balkans, Algeria, Central Europe and Turkey. But outbreak of World War I in 1914 forced him to write the ballet The Wooden Prince which gave him an international fame.
Born Béla Viktor János Bartók, he was a brilliant Hungarian composer, pianist and collector of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk music. Born on March 25, 1881, Bartok was one of the founders of the field of ethnomusicology, the anthropology or ethnography of music. His best known work The Wooden Prince is now played by Colorado Symphony Orchestra to honor this great composer. The New Symph. Orch. of London, Walter Susskind, has reviewed The Wooden Prince in words, "The wooden Prince has a stoy that can not be followed, let alone set to music with a convincing continuity. Listening to the music through the phono graph without attempting any correlation with the story it purports to portray, one gains a much better impression of the score. while this is admittedly a subterfuge - after all, stage music is supposed to depend on the stage - one is pleasantly surprised and gratified to observe that the abstract musical logic of the composer prevails over the obstacles placed in his way by the libretist. With very little effort, this pantomime could be transformed into a superb symphonic suite."
