Background - Tcu Horned Frogs
The school began as an independent, as most schools did until the sport of college football became more organized. The Horned Frogs joined the Southwest Conference in 1923. From 1923 to 1966 TCU football flourished under the direction of coaches Francis Schmidt, Dutch Meyer and Abe Martin. Years of mediocre seasons and scandals followed until Dennis Franchione took over in 1998 and turned things around.
Currently Gary Patterson is the head coach and he has done a wonderful job keeping the school competitive in the Mountain West conference and consistently in the top 25 of the AP and the Coaches polls.

Tcu Horned Frogs 2009 College Football Season Preview

 The TCU Horned Frogs finished behind the 12-0 Utah Utes in 2008 with a 10-2 record and a 7-1 record in the Mountain West Conference. The Horned Frogs then went to the Poinsettia Bowl with the number 11 ranking and surprised again with a 17-16 win over the Boise State Broncos. The Horned Frogs mercilessly ran for over 275 yards, slowing down the game and taking advantage of the mess in the Broncos defensive front seven.
The Horned Frogs come into the 2009 college football season with a few doubters. Still, TCU has a 17th rank in the USA Today and ESPN preseason poll. Individually, offensive lineman Marshall Newhouse, kicker Ross Evans, defensive lineman Jerry Hughes, defensive backs Rafael Priest and Nick Sanders, punter Anson Kelton, and punt returner Jerry Kerley are among the top in the Mountain West. Quarterback Andy Dalton is also mentioned among the best in the conference.
The offense should run smoothly again with Dalton a threat to throw and run the ball, running back Joseph Turner, receiver Jimmy Young, and a great offensive line that features two great offensive tackles.
The defense may feature the best secondary unit in the conference, but the TCU Horned Frogs have some serious concerns at the defensive tackle positions and the linebacker position. The team may be able to thwart the pass, but they look like they will definitely not repeat as the best run-stopping unit in the nation.
