Background - Miami Hurricanes
In 1973, UM's Athletic Federation, the fund raising arm of the athletic department at the time, commissioned a local public relations expert to develop a distinctive logo. The University had gone several years with a variety of helmet and uniform changes and the Federation noted that a number of major colleges have the initials UM. Miami designer Bill Bodenhamer suggested the "U" idea, which lent itself to slogans like "U gotta believe" and "U is great".

Miami Hurricanes 2009 College Football Season Preview

 The Miami Hurricanes did not have a tremendous season in 2008. The Hurricanes finished 4-4 in the Coastal Division of the ACC and 7-5 overall. Miami still managed to get into the Emerald Bowl in AT&T Park, where they lost 24-17 to the California Golden Bears.
The Hurricanes still have some believers at ESPN, whose power rankings have them ranked 24th. The USA Today Poll is not nearly as kind, leaving them off the Top 25. Part of the reason for the lack of love may be the lack of star power. The team's preseason all conference picks include kicker Matt Bosher and punt returner Travis Benjamin. Special teams are important, but they are not sexy by any means.
The offense still has some hope with a great group of running backs headlined by Graig Cooper and Javarris James and a receivers led by Aldarius Johnson and Travis Benjamin. The issue people have with the Hurricanes is that Jacoby Harris has been named the full time starter after sharing the role last season only because the other quarterback transferred. Also, the offensive line is still quite iffy. The running backs cannot run if there are no holes and the receivers cannot catch of the quarterback has no time to make a read and throw the ball.
The defense is looking much better than the offense. The linebackers are among the best in the conference and Miami's defensive line is expected to be quite good. The defense will need to be utterly dominant if the Hurricanes want to stay in the Top 25 and compete for the ACC championship.
