Background - Washington State Cougars
The Cougars played well defensively last year (59 ppg allowed) and kept turnovers to a minimum on most nights. Senior guard Thomas Kelati became a fairly dependable scorer (11.1 ppg), and senior wing Jeff Varem (9.6 ppg) is an intriguing combination of power and quickness. They play a slowdown style (58 ppg on offense) and allowed opponents to shoot 46% from the field!

 Departed point guard Marcus Moore did so much for the club last season, and there is no one with his range of skills to fill the void. True freshman Derrick Low, who spent last winter in Pullman, Wash., was expected to take on the burden at the point, but he is injured and will be sidelined six weeks. WSU also lost freshman center Chris Henry, who suffered multiple ligament damage to his right ankle in a pick-up game on Oct. 12. Henry, the team's biggest player at 6-8, 248 pounds, is expected to return by the start of Pac-10 play.
Bennett is another recruiting class or two away from possibly transforming WSU into a team that moves toward the middle of the Pac-10 crowd. But at least his approach has made the Cougars a difficult opponent, and that's progress.
