Texas Tickets
The Texas Longhorns are looking to turn things around in 2009-2010, after last year's disappointing conference and tournament performances; the team struggled to a 9-7 Big 12 record, was sent packing by the end of the first weekend of NCAA Tournament, and quite frankly put in a season the likes of which Longhorn fans are not accustomed to. Fans are not to worry though, as coach Rick Barnes feels the additional year of experience and a talented group of newcomers should change all of that. Dogus Balbay improved as last season progressed, dishing out 3 assists and only turning the ball over 1.4 times per game, but the 6-1 junior was not much of a scorer and only started 13 games for the Longhorns. Justin Mason filled in much of the time at the point, leading the team with 4 assists per contest, but he does his best work off the ball and struggled to score because he spent too much time on the ball. Mason is not much of a shooter either, but he can be a very dangerous scorer if Balbay and Jai Lucas, a transfer from Florida, can handle the point for Texas. Varez Ward had a decent year as a freshman, showing the ability to create shots for himself off the dribble. Jordan Hamilton and Shawn Williams may battle for the starting small forward spot if coach Barnes chooses to play big, but 6-7 Damion James will most likely spend much of his time in the four slot, with Dexter Pittman starting for the Longhorns in the middle. Pittman, a 6-10, 290 pound center, not only emerged as a fairly consistent scorer close to the basket, but also has proven to be a capable rebounder and shot blocker. Gary Johnson averaged 10 points per game for Texas while mostly coming off the bench, and a player of his ability should make the Longhorn frontcourt nearly impossible to stop. On top of that, add Clint Chapman, Matt Hill, and Alexis Wangmene to the mix, and you end up with a ton of quality depth.

Once he is eligible after the fall semester, Lucas could help to address Texas' point guard concerns; while not a true point guard, Lucas will do his fair share of scoring, and is a talented ball handler who can run the point when needed. Already ranked as one of the best recruits in the country, incoming freshman Avery Bradley improved greatly during his last year of high school, will attack the basket with ease, and has a nice mid-range game, although it may be asking too much to expect him to replace the outside shooting of the departed A.J. Abrams. With potential stars Hamilton and Williams on the wings, at 6-7 and 6-6 respectively, those two will bring some size to the Longhorns in the backcourt. Realistically, it is still James who is the star of this team, and when he withdrew from the NBA Draft, Texas' expectations instantaneously skyrocketed. With over 15 points and 9 rebounds per game a year ago, James will be a constant double-double threat. Additionally, even at only 6-7, James is a strong 225 pounds who is obviously not afraid to battle in the paint, while also having the ability to step outside and hit the long shot. The Longhorns seem to have the talent which will erase the disappointment of last season, and leave them deserving of their #3 ranking in the preseason polls. Get your tickets now, and come out to the Frank Erwin Center in Austin to cheer the Texas Longhorns to another run far into the 2010 Tournament.
