Background - San Francisco Dons
USF also has a new Head Coach in Jessie Evans and he makes his USF debut as the Dons face the Stanford Cardinal November 19th in the Pete Newell Challenge in Oakland. Evans has spent the last seven seasons at Louisiana Lafayette, where he had a 132-81 record.
The San Francisco Dons do have some good scorers, particularly in the backcourt. The big off-season story was star guard John Cox, who was granted a sixth season by the NCAA. Cox was an all-West Coast Conference selection in 2002-03, who strained his MCL in the first game last year and didn't play the rest of the season. Cox, the son of former Dons' star Chubby Cox, had an outstanding junior season, ranking second in the WCC in conference scoring at almost 19 per game.

 USF also returns three starters. Six-foot senior point guard Andre Hazel (8.1 points, 4.7 assists) and 6'-7', 220-pound senior forward Tyrone Riley (11.2 points, 7 rebounds) form a solid offensive punch along with Cox. 6'-4' junior Jerome Gumbs, 6-4 senior Dommanic Ingerson (7.7 points) and 6-foot senior Jason Gaines round out an experienced team.
SF was very good ATS at home (10-5 SU, 8-5 ATS) and (5-9 SU/9-5 ATS) on the road. They had a 68-62 home loss to St. Mary's, 68-62, blowing a 10-point halftime lead (the lack of depth hurt them late in the game). St. Mary's controlled the boards 31-17 and while shooting 54%, so defense is not a strength for San Fran. SF also had a big 84-74 home upset win over BYU as a +12 dog.
The frontcourt might get out-rebounded a lot against some of the taller WCC teams. 6'-7' senior Tyrone Riley (11 ppg, 7.2 rpg) returns for his senior year, but he needs more help as they are short on height up front while getting acquainted with the new coach.
