Background - Rutgers Knights
The 2004-05 RU squad will be very strong in the backcourt. Senior Ricky Shields averaged a team-high 15.5 points last season and connected on 93 baskets from beyond the arc. As a team, the Scarlet Knights set a school record by making 239 3- pointers. Sophomore Quincy Douby gives the Scarlet Knights another top flite shooter punch. The 6-3 marksman hit 42.6 percent from 3-point range and led all BIG EAST freshman with a 12.5 scoring average. Douby was a BIG EAST All-Rookie Team selection despite starting only five games.
Marquis Webb returns to direct the RU attack. He started all but one game as a freshman and posted averages of 7.2 points and 2.9 assists. The 6-5 guard also provides solid defense and can help at both guard spots and small forward. Also returning in the backcourt is 6-3 senior Juel Wiggan, who played 21.8 minutes per game and averaged 4.7 points.

 Freshman Manny Quezada will push to be noticed at the point. While the backcourt is deep and experienced, the Scarlet Knights need new faces to contribute up front. Six-eight senior Adrian Hill started 17 games last season and averaged 6.4 points and 4.7 boards, but he suffered an off-season knee injury and his status early in the season is uncertain.
Six-nine sophomore Byron Joynes (1.9, 2.0) saw only limited action last year, but will get a long look this season. Two freshmen also figure to have plenty of opportunity to contribute right away. Ollie Bailey is a 6-7 power forward candidate and 6-10 Dan Waterstradt is a 6-10 forward/center, who should be comfortable in RU's transition and pressing game.
Waters and the Scarlet Knights want to maintain their homecourt success. They were 16-2 at the RAC last year. Despite the losses, if Rutgers continues piling up wins at home, another 20 win season is a possibility.
