The 2009-2010 Louisville Cardinals have their work cut out for them as they look to replace Earl Clark and Terrence Williams, the driving force of last season's squad. Not only did the duo lead the team in scoring, rebounding and assists, but the combination also contributed over 3 steals and 2 blocks per contest for good measure. Coach Rick Pitino has a lot of talent on his roster, and Louisville is definitely going to need it in order to fill the empty shoes left by Clark and Williams.

After averaging over 2 assists per game last year, Edgar Sosa could probably handle the Louisville point guard duties, but Peyton Siva should lend a steady hand to the position, leaving Sosa and Jerry Smith to score from the wings. While Smith is a better outside shooter, Sosa is an intelligent player who can work with what the defense gives him – both will be seeing a lot more floor time this season and need to be more consistent with their scoring output. As a pretty good sixth man last year, Preston Knowles should provide the same this season, with most of his shots coming from three-point land where hits on 43 percent of his chances.

The departure of Clark and Williams will put a ton of pressure on sophomore Samardo Samuels, who was very impressive as a freshman on his way to averaging 12 points, 5 rebounds, and just over 1 block per game. While Louisville may not need him to score much more, Samuels will need to become more of a defensive presence in the paint and improve on the boards. The only other returning forward with significant minutes last season was Terrence Jennings, a 6-10 sophomore who contributed plenty when he was given the chance to play. If he can just duplicate that production while playing more minutes, the Cardinal frontcourt will be sitting pretty.
