Coach John Thompson III may have a few holes to fill, but he has gotten his hands on a few recruits who should make an immediate impact for his Hoyas. The star of the three man class is Hollis Thompson – the 6-8 small forward enrolled early at Georgetown, has been practicing with the team since January, and should be a starter from game one. Next is multi-faceted guard Vee Sanford, who gives the Hoyas some much needed depth on the perimeter, while also providing an offensive kick off the bench. Then comes Jerrelle Benimon, a 6-7, 242 pound power forward who is not expected to do much as a freshman, although he is quite versatile and could emerge as a solid contributor in a season or two. For a freshman, Monroe shouldered much of the burden admirably last year. Finishing up with almost 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks a game, Monroe can obviously do a little of everything, and can truly dominate most opponents, especially if the other Hoyas can consistently hit their outside shots. This group has the talent to not only make the NCAA Tournament, but to stay alive for at least a couple of rounds once they get there. The key will be that when Monroe is double teamed under the basket that he finds somebody with an open look from the outside. The Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. is where it all begins, so get your Georgetown Hoya tickets today and follow them through the tough Big East season.
