Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 31.5square miles (81.5km²), of which, 9.9square miles (25.6km²) of it is land and 21.6square miles (55.9km²) of it (68.56%) is water.

Population Factor

According to the Census that was held in the year 2000, “there were 7,261 people, 2,673 households, and 2,012 families residing in the town. The population density was 734.4 people per square mile (283.5/km²). There were 2,805 housing units at an average density of 283.7/sq mi (109.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.20% White, 0.18% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.69% of the population.

There were 2,673 households out of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.8% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% were non-families. 21.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.16.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.4 males.”
