Coal Chamber was a nu metal band formed in the year 1994 at Los Angeles, CA, U.S. The band went on to enjoy some wide mainstream success in the years from 1994's to late 90's. This was the period of the "nu metal boom" which the coal chamber, along with other bands like Kon, had created.The reason for the band gaining a large following near the beginning of their career was because arguably they were the first dark themed nu metal band. With an image that had more in common with the Goth subculture as compared to followers of Hip hop.
The Members of the band were Meegs Rascón on the Guitars, Dez Fafara the main Vocalist, Rayna Foss-Rose on the Bass (1995-2002), and Nadja Peulen again on the Bass (2002-2003) and lastly Mikey "Bug" Cox playing the Drums.Coal Chamber signed with Roadrunner Records in 1996 and recorded their debut album for their self-titled debut record in 1997. The album was released and was hugely appreciated, especially for their first single "Loco"; this track is still referred to as Coal Chamber's best song till date.
Their next album was "chamber music" which was released in the fall of 1999. This second album was considered a step away from the first one as it was slightly off beat with their nu metal image they had created with their previous release. This new album had a more gothic metal inspired feel. This album also had a cover of a song originally sung by Peter Gabriel in 1982 named "Shock the Monkey" with the legendary rocker of the time Ozzy Osbourne providing vocals along with the band's pilot singer Dez Fafara.

The band followed up these two albums by their third album called "Dark Days" in the spring of 2002. The album garnered mixed reviews from the music fraternity. The Bassist of the group Rayna Foss-Rose left the band to raise her daughter even before the album was fully recorded. Nadja Peulen went on to take her place. She was chosen for the role as she had previously taken Foss-Rose's place during the latter's pregnancy in between the first two albums.
Later in the summer of 2003 a compilation album of the selected songs of the coal chamber was released titled "Giving the Devil His Due", this also included some demo tracks done by the band previous to year 1997 when they signed with Roadrunner Records. Coal Chamber dispersed in year 2003, shortly after their lead vocalist Dez Fafara left them to form the Metal core group Devil Driver.
