Clifford was the chosen puppy of the litter that was acquired by a little city kid, named Emily Elizabeth Howard. It was her birthday present. Nobody knew that Clifford will grow, but Emily Elizabeth's love for her sweet pet puppy changed Clifford dramatically. He grew over 25 feet tall which led the Howard family to leave the city. They had to move to the open spaces of Birdwell Island just for the sake this Red Big Dog. Birdwell is an anagram of author Norman Bridwell's last name.
A number of successful television adaptation has been produced by Scholastic Studios on PBS Kids. The adaptations has been aired from 2000 to 2003, but still reruns presently. Before these adaptation, a series of Clifford educational videos has been produced by Nelvana in 1988. After this, in the early 90s, Warner Bros. released a Clifford video in which live action was mixed with animation.
