Cliff Richard
Cliff Richard has been around the music industry for six decades. First he was a rocker with his backup group The Shadows in the late 1950s, but then he converted to Christianity and turned to pop while the Beatles were making rock the new god. His longevity and his appeal has helped him produce 130 singles, albums, and EPs that have landed in the top 20 in the UK. After selling more than 260 million records he has continued to perform live and sell tickets to his brand of music.
Born Harry Rodger Webb on October 14, 1940, his family moved from British India to Newton Aycliffe in County Durham in England. As Harry Webb he was the lead singer with the British group The Drifters. The group shares the name with the American group, but not its success. That success would come with the single Schoolboy Crush, which went to number two on the UK charts. The effect of the song was that Webb, now Cliff Richard, was supposed to be the British version of Elvis. Cliff Richard tickets with the Shadows in the States sold well, but a lack of support from the distribution doomed the group's chances of long term success in rock n roll.
Despite several appearances in the feature movies and on the charts in the U.S. and UK, Cliff Richard was not considered part of the British Invasion. The lack of success coupled with his rediscovery of Christianity led to his conversion to a pop singer while the rest of the world was still fascinated with the newness of rock. He performed before Billy Grahams audiences and sold tickets in front of deeply religious crowds.

Artist Biography - Cliff Richard
|
His career suffered as rock became the dominant genre, but he began to resurrect his career in 1976. The comeback marked his return to the rock genre he had left a decade earlier. The single Devil Woman became his first undeniable American hit and his album I'm Nearly Famous garnered support from high profile artists like Jimmy Page, Elton John, and Eric Clapton. His resurgence sold some concert tickets and albums, but he came up just short.
In 1980 Richard officially changed his deed poll from Harry Webb to Cliff Richard and the year before he again hit the top of the charts in the UK with the pop single We Don't Talk Anymore. The times had changed and he had pop hits with Dreaming and a duet with Olivia Newton-John on a song from the musical Xanadu. Richard tickets sold on and off throughout the rest of the decade, though he had cemented himself as one of the most famous performers in his home nation.
Cliff Richard was knighted in 1995, becoming the first rock star to be given such an honor. Richard remains popular in the United Kingdom and has managed to keep a following in the United States. OnlineSeats will have Cliff Richard tickets to his concerts as his tours come state-side.
