His second single "Sailing" defined his success and made him a superstar overnight. He added more hits to his credit, including the Top 20 hits, "Never Be the Same" and "Say You'll Be Mine." the popularity and appeal of his music saw him walking away with a record-setting five Grammys in 1981, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "Sailing."

His awards didn't stop there, if the Grammys weren't enough , his second number one single the theme of the movie Arthur, "Best That You Can Do" won him the coveted Academy Award. Cross came back with his much-anticipated effort, "Another Page" in 1983 but the album failed to click with the audience and except for the Top Ten entry "Think of Laura." The album could not repeat the success of its predecessor. His next offering, "Every Turn of the World" appeared in 1985, and "Back of My Mind" in 1988.

Cross was eventually dropped by his label Warner records. But he was relentless to relive his good days and his next album, "Rendezvous," appeared five years later on BMG. He had many more releases in the following years. His most recent album was released in 2000 and was titled, "The Red Room."
