Chicago Symphony Orchestra Tickets for Sale

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has now been in existence for 109-years. It was formed in 1891, when Theodore Thomas-the leading conductor in America and a recognized music pioneer, was invited by a Chicago Businessman Norman Fay to establish a symphony orchestra in Chicago. Thomas agreed and aimed to establish a permanent orchestra with performance capabilities of the highest quality. His dream was eventually realized when the orchestra performed its first concerts on October 16 and 17, 1891. Maestro Thomas served as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for thirteen years until he died in 1905 - just three weeks after the Orchestra Hall was inaugurated and became the CSO's permanent home.

Frederick Stock succeeded Thomas as the Orchestra's conductor. Stock began his career in the viola section in 1895 and four years later became assistant conductor. His tenure at the helm lasted a record thirty-seven years, from 1905 to 1942, and till date it is the longest term served by any music director at CSO. Stock was dynamic and innovative, his years as head saw the founding of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago in 1919, it was the first training orchestra in the USA affiliated with a major symphony orchestra. He established youth auditions and organized the first subscription concerts especially for children. He also started a series of popular concerts. Three distinguished conductors headed the Orchestra in the coming decade: Désiré Defauw was music director from 1943 to 1947; Artur Rodzinski took charge from 1947-1948; and Rafael Kubelík headed the Orchestra for three seasons from 1950 to 1953.

The next ten years was the coming of Fritz Reiner, his recordings with the CSO are considered performance hallmarks. In 1957, Reiner invited Margaret Hillis to establish the Chicago Symphony Chorus. At the same time, Carlo Maria Giulini started to appear in Chicago regularly; he was named the principal guest conductor in 1969 and served in that role until 1972. The second guest conductor in the Orchestra's history was Claudio Abbado and he held the position from 1982 to 1985. For the next five seasons Jean Martinon held the position of music director.

The CSO's eighth music director, Sir George Solti served from 1969 to 1991. He held the title of music director laureate and returned occasionaly for several weeks each season until his death in September 1997. The arrival of Georg Solti launched one of the most successful musical partnerships of our time. The CSO's undetook its maiden international tour in 1971 under Solti's direction

Full-length concerts taped at Orchestra Hall and the Ravinia Festival, are broadcast over 200 stations across the country under the sponsorship of Amoco Corporation with Chicago-area broadcasts sponsored by The Northern Trust Bank, United Airlines, and the Amoco Corporation.
