In 1972, he released his first LP, Vida, which soon became popular among Argentineans. Later on, they released "Confesiones de invierno" (Winter Confessions) in 1973. This album was very successful commercially. In 1974 his band evolved to a more traditional rock sound, incorporating bass and drums. With this change, the band launched its new album, "Instituciones" later its name was changed to "Pequeñas anécdotas de las instituciones". The album had a social angle highlighting on the unstable nature of Argentinian situation at the time. Some of his other famous albums include "Bubulina" (1976) and Eiti Leda (1978).
Finally, his honeymoon with his band Sui Generis ended on September 9, 1975 and later on formed a new band "La máquina de Hacer Pájaros "("The bird-making machine"). Two LP's were released that year, Adiós Sui Generis ("Goodbye Sui Generis") volumes I and II. He recorded two albums: La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros (1976) and Películas ("Movies", 1977. Songs on "Movies" carried a political message pointing against the dictatorial government of those years. After dissolving "La máquina" Charly recruited a gifted 19-year-old bass player, Pedro Aznar, and drummer Oscar Moro his old partner from La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros. The band was named Serú Girán. Their first show was "Charly García... and Serú Girán" which did not become that popular among the admirers. The band developed a new sound in which bass was very important, and a striking aesthetic with lyrics packed with poetry. Their new LP "La grasa de las capitales" ("Grease," or "Fat," "of the Capitals").The public received the album with enthusiasm and the band's shows improved progressively. A romance seemed to develop between the people and Charly‘s Serú Girán. In 1980 his new long play called Bicicleta ("Bicycle") came up. The music was modern and strong and very melodious and became very successful commercially, as fans found it remarkable. This threw Charly to the zenith as fans considered his music best ever. He was recognized as a great artist. His shows drew crowds from among both the rich and the poor. On September 13, 1980, Serú Girán and Spinetta Jade played together. This combined show has been considered one of the greatest in the history of Argentinian rock. 1981 was the best year for the band in terms of live performances.
Garcia's solo career began in 1982 when he recorded Yendo de la Cama al Living, the soundtrack to the film Pubis Angelical. Several personal songs like "Inconsciente Colectivo" and "Yo No Quiero Volverme Tan Loco" were included in it. The enormously good response from the public left their historical mark and proved that García was on the right way. It was at this time war was going on and his songs clearly depicted the portrait and cry of the desolate on the one hand while on the other carried a message of hope for the stricken people. These songs that read the pulse of the nation were "No bombardeen Buenos Aires" (Don't bomb Buenos Aires), "Inconsciente colectivo" (Collective unconscious) and "Yo no quiero volverme tan loco" (I don't want to go that crazy).

It was a rock version of the Argentinean national anthem with a fresh, strong, respectful and sincere infusion to national life.
In 1994 Garcia struck back. The lanes of Buenos Aires were full with advertisements "The genius has come back". His new project was "La Lágrima" (The Tear's Daughter). In 1995, he recorded "Hello! MTV Unplugged", his one of the best performance. "Buenos Aires Vivo", the free public-rock festival concert, February 1999 by Garcia was one of the biggest concerts in the history of Argentina. In 2000, he came back to Sui Generis and an album, Sinfonía Para Adolescentes was released. His 2002 release "Influencia" was model classic song-oriented album.
