He shifted base to Los Angeles and was soon doing stints with jazz greats like Art Pepper and Hampton Hawes. Haden would truly discover himself as a bassist after meeting sax player Ornette Coleman, whom Haden would have a long and successful collaboration with. Haden is now best known for his lyrical bass lines that he incorporates into his songs but during his collaborations with Coleman, Haden was initially thrown by the harmolodic method of playing and started out by just echoing Coleman's riffs on the bass. It was only later that Haden got the hang of it and created a style that has since become legendary.
Over his career Haden has collaborated with some of the best musicians that jazz has ever had but he also distinguished himself as a composer. Haden began to explore styles and genres that were not considered standard jazz and was soon melding a number of styles together. By the seventies, he took a more experimental route, collaborating with long time partner Carla Bley and exploring the less constrictive styles and sounds of free jazz and political music. Haden soon branched to explore styles like spiritual hymns, Cuban folk and American folk music. In 1997 he collaborated with Pat Metheny to create a monumental album featuring the music that influenced them while growing up in Missouri, a musical style he refers to as Americana music.
