However there is one man who has become one of the truly great country legends of all time and that man is Charley Pride. Pride grew up in a large family in Mississippi, the son of very poor sharecroppers. As a child, Pride dreamed of becoming a baseball player and worked hard to achieve that goal, finally making it to the Memphis Red Sox team, which was a Negro League Baseball team. At the time, racial segregation was a harsh reality and it was in these overwhelming conditions that Pride made a name for himself.
Pride would sing and play the guitar while on tour but he soon realized that a young African-American man, no matter how talented, would never become a Major League Baseball player in the sixties. Pride packed up his guitar and headed out to start his career in music. After cutting a demo for Jack Clement, Pride managed to get a record deal with RCA Records in Nashville. There was talk about keeping Pride's race a secret but the idea was dropped and Pride began on his country music career.
It was probably one of the smartest moves in country music history. Pride quickly established himself as a force to reckon with in Nashville and would go on sell over 70 million records and have 36 number one hits. In 1993 Pride became the first African-American to be invited to join the Grand Ole Opry. He was presented with the Pioneer Award by the Academy of Country Music and entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. He has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a stretch of Mississippi was named after him.
