Born in Rome, Cecilia Bartoli received her voice training at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia whilst at the same time being taught and coached by her parents, Silvana Bazzoni and Angelo Bartoli, both professional singers.
Bartoli's early career included collaborations with Herbert von Karajan, Daniel Barenboim and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. She has since worked with a host of other acclaimed conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Riccardo Chailly, William Christie, Myung-Whun Chung, Charles Dutoit, Christopher Hogwood, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Marc Minkovski, Riccardo Muti, Sir Simon Rattle, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Sir Georg Solti.
Since the beginning of her career Cecilia Bartoli has been an enormously successful concert artist. Her recital appearances have been accompanied by leading pianists such as Daniel Barenboim, Myung-Whun Chung, James Levine, Andras Schiff and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Besides concert arias of Mozart, Rossini, Puccini etc, her concert repertoire also comprises German Lieder and songs and arias of Bizet, Viardot, Berlioz and Ravel.

Cecilia Bartoli's discography comprises more than 10 complete opera recordings, from Mozart via Rossini to Hdndel and Haydn, and numerous solo discs. With her award winning "Vivaldi Album", which was released in the autumn of 1999, the artist has enjoyed an astounding success and succeeded in awakening a new interest on an international level in the previously completely unknown operas of Antonio Vivaldi. The "Gluck-Album", released the subsequent year, won the Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Performance within a few months of its release. Acclaimed by critics internationally, this CD topped numerous Best-of-the-Year lists. The unique voice of the great mezzo-soprano, Cecilia Bartoli, is heard in a collection of eight arias by Christoph Willibald Gluck. Cecilia Bartoli's recent disc of unknown Vivaldi arias, The Vivaldi Album, has sold nearly half a million copies and got great awards including Echo Klassik 2000, Diapason d'Or 2000 and the 2001 Grammy Award for "Best Classical Vocal Performance". For Bartoli, Gluck was a natural progression from Vivaldi. "I was surprised to learn that Gluck spent some months in Prague at the time when we know operas by Vivaldi were being performed there." Cecilia Bartoli has chosen dramatic scenes and arias from La Semiramide riconosciuta (1748), Ezio (1750), La clemenza di Tito (1752), Antigono (1756), Il Parnaso confuso (1765) and La corona (1765). "I believe that the power of his music was immediately recognized by [Gluck's] contemporaries", enthused Bartoli. "Ezio was premiered in 1750, the year of Bach's death. If you listen to the recitativo accompagnato we recorded, you can immediately feel that something new is going on, a new language that is no longer related to the Baroque style but is opening the door to Classicism." Bartoli is accompanied by the period instrument ensemble Akademie f|r Alte Musik Berlin, which was formed in 1982 and has worked regularly with Cecilia Bartoli since its first appearance with her at the Wigmore Hall in 1999. Once again, Cecilia Bartoli invites listeners to share her exciting discoveries, composed by one of the greatest figures in the history of music. Just as The Vivaldi Album triggered world-wide interest in Vivaldi's operatic output, so this recording is set to do the same for the genius of Gluck's Metastasian operas. In summer 2002, Cecilia Bartoli renewed her exclusive contract with the Decca Music Group which will continue this legendary discography. As a first product of this collaboration the 2003 "Salieri Album", recorded with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, conducted by Adam Fischer, immediately became a best-seller. During the 2004/05 season Miss Bartoli will give numerous concerts and will also appear on stage in Zurich and London as an opera singer in April and June 2005.
