Cat Power is the stage name for singer and songwriter Charlyn 'Chan' Marshall. Her father was a blues musician and piano player and would prove to have a huge influence on her musically. Chan dropped out of high school to pursue her musical career and with a truckload of talent and songwriting skills, she soon had a lot of people listening. She initially performed with a few backing musicians and began to make her name as Cat Power. She later moved to New York where she would open for Liz Phair- a taste of the huge things that were to come.
Chan's musical prowess was so impressive that she managed to wow members from Sonic Youth and Two Dollar Guitar, who pushed her to record an album and appeared on her first two records. By 1998 she had established herself as a force to reckon with on the indie music scene but she had become saturated with her own work and decided to release an album of innovatively interpreted covers next. She came back in 2003 with another critically acclaimed album of original material that featured guest stars Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. She would later tour with the legendary Nick Cave as well.
