California Youth Symphony
California Youth Symphony was formed in 1952 by Aaron Sten. Sten is also the founder of the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra. Sten wanted to form symphony orchestra, in order to provide platform to the school-age musicians. California Youth Symphony became the first independent youth symphony that was formed in California. Aaron Sten became the conductor of the symphony. During its first phase, only twenty-two players attended it. The following year, the orchestra performed its first concert in front of huge crowd. The performance was applauded by many. It also became the first youth orchestra in the United States, to tour abroad, in 1963. During that time, they performed almost twelve concerts in Japan. After that there was no looking back, they started touring in Mexico, Australia, in many parts of Europe and also in some parts in Asia. In the year 1994, California Youth Symphony took part in the International Youth and Music Festival Competition held in Vienna and won the competition. Apart from doing shows, the symphony orchestra have also collaborated with other youth orchestras also, performing in Japan and in Switzerland. In the year 1990, Leo Eylar became the musical director of California Youth Symphony. Recently, it has concluded a tour to the People's Republic of China.

California Youth Symphony is known for performing beautiful and challenging repertoire, which includes works by some famous musicians such as Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Dmitri Shostakovich, Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, and Sergei Prokofiev, and a plethora more. California Youth Symphony have premiered a number of modern works also which consists Rhapsody for Orchestra by the music director. Rhapsody for Orchestra has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize also. California Youth Symphony has even recorded a number of CDs, such as "The Maestro's Pick," which is actually a compilation of some of the best performances of California Youth Symphony which they have performed during the 2004-2005 season. California Youth Symphony consists of number of ensembles also. Apart from the California Youth Symphony, there is an intermediate level Associate Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Flute Ensemble and Preparatory Ensembles for strings and winds. There are almost 500 California Youth Symphony musicians from the greater San Francisco Bay Area. These young musicians ranges from elementary school to high school seniors. Leo Eylar is the composer as well as the conductor of the Associate Orchestra and the Senior Orchestra, of California Youth Symphony, which is a premier orchestra. Then there is Wind Preparatory Ensembles which function as large symphonic bands. These bands mainly comprises of middle school students as well as high school students. Rosita Amador directs The Wind Preparatory Ensembles. The orchestration consists of flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, bassoons, trumpets, French horns, trombones, and tubas and performs almost two concerts a year. Next is CYS Junior and Intermediate Preparatory String Ensembles, where the younger musicians prepare and perform under the direction of Kati Kyme and performs three concerts every year. Associate Orchestra has typical orchestration and plays medium-difficult repertoire and performs 3-4 concerts per year. The Associate Orchestra CYS' intermediate level symphony-orchestra. Members of the 2nd Wind Prep Ensemble and the Intermediate Strings usually graduate to this orchestra, should they choose to stay in the institution, therefore rendering it a sort of convergent ensemble. The Associate Orchestra plays medium-difficult repertoire, and has typical orchestration. This ensemble serves as a wonderful arena for younger, less-experienced musicians to gain incomparable experience in the world of performance and to prepare them for advancement to the CYS Senior Orchestra. The repertoire is varied and serves as a valuable introduction to the orchestral experience. The CYS Associate Orchestra performs 3-4 concerts per year. Members attend a summer day camp in August. Then comes Senior Orchestra, Flute Choir and Percussion Ensemble. The newcomers to the CYS must audition to be part of the orchestra. California Youth Symphony is a non-profit organization, which has throughout the years have attracted a number of talented young musicians and still strives to provide excellent classical musical opportunities to the young musicians on all symphonic instruments.
