The California Guitar Trio came into being when three guitar students decided they wanted to make it big. It was 1987when Paul Richards and Hideyo Moriya (USA) met Bert Lams for the first time at one of Robert Fripp's popular Guitar Craft Courses. The trio shared the same passion for music and after completing their course they joined Robert Fripp's League of Crafty Guitarists, the ensemble then went on a long tour. In 1991, the friends formed the California Guitar Trio in Los Angeles. The trio have got a lot of acclaim since their debut, they are sometimes compared to the legendary group "The Guitar Trio" (Al DiMeola, JohnMc'Laughlin and Paco de Lucia).

These young artists had their objectives in mind and wanted to create complex compositions with a blend of classic or Baroque music. In the start they covered the California surf tunes and also opened for King Crimson Concerts and other popular artists like David Sylvian, Tito Puente, The Flower Kings and John Mc'Laughlin. The band were signed up in 1993 by the Fripp/Crimson label. They issued their fantastic debut album "The Yamanashi Blues" in 1997.

The album covered genres like classic, pop, jazz and surf music. This was just the tip of the ice berg, their next release "Invitation," soared the music charts and included hits like "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly." The band then embarked on a, extensive tour to promote the album and to cash in on their popularity. The trio's next album came three years later and was titled, "Pathways." This album was a bestseller and included some great compositions of Beethoven, Stan Funicelli and Bach among others.
