The participants also creates Black Rock City, often shortened as BRC, where Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs the layout and the general city infrastructure. The volunteers of the festival often resides in it for several weeks, during and after the festival. The other parts of the cities includes theme camps, art installations and individual camping, all of which are created every year by the participants of the festival. Then there is Center Camp, that is used as the meeting place for the entire city. Next comes, Villages Camps provides both entertainment as well as service to the residents who are residing temporarily. The Camp is located in the innermost streets of Black Rock City. Then comes Theme Camps are actually a group of people who represent themselves under a single identity.
The community of Burning Man uses specific terminology, such as, the participants of the festival refer themselves as well as the other participants as "burners". Those who are attending the festival for the first time are termed as "virgin". Then there are people who come to the festival just to be a mere spectator are often termed as "Yahoo" or "tourist". Then there is the term that is generally used for fly-away items and trash on the playa and the term is "M.O.O.P" means Matter Out Of Place.
The festival gives the participants a chance to express themselves in various ways. Since the festival takes place in the uninhabited large desert of playa, the participants are requested not to pollute and defile the playa with wastages.
The desert is maintained by The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which has laid down very strict rules and procedures for the festival. Some of these rules and regulation are capture of fluid drippings from participant vehicles, trash cleanup, removal of burn scars and dust abatement. When the festival ends, a group of volunteers cleans up the remnants of the festival, taking utmost care that there are no traces of the festival.
Burning Man began in the year 1986 when Larry Harvey, Jerry James and some other friends met on Baker Beach in San Francisco. They burned a wooden man, which was eight foot (2.4 m) tall and also a smaller wooden dog. Harvey, said it was "a spontaneous act of radical self-expression." and after that it became a regular affair. With the passage of time, it moved from Baker Beach in San Francisco to the Black Rock Desert of Nevada and later to playa.

Burning Man is a festival that was founded by Bell Jeff. The festival is annually organized by Black Rock City, LLC, annually, under the leadership of Jeff. Every year the festival concludes in the month of September on the American Labor Day holiday. Burning Man every years is celebrated on the playa of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, that lies 90 miles (150 km) north-northeast of Reno. In recent years, the specific location on the playa keeps on changing, but the location has remained quite constant. The name of the festival has come from the ritual where a large wooden sculpture of a man is burned on the sixth day.
The aim of Burning Man is that whosoever is present in the festival has to take part in the events and not to remain a mute spectator. Other features of the festival includes decommodification, community work, artwork, and revelry. The festival consists of ten principles that are radical self-expression, inclusion, immediacy, participation, leaving no trace, civic responsibility, communal effort, radical self-reliance, decommodification, gifting and inclusion.
