Bridge School Benefit
Every year the Bridge School has a benefit concert right outside San Francisco at Shoreline Amphitheatre and 2003 was an exciting one. Pearl Jam, Wilco, Counting Crows, Willie Nelson and others joined Neil Young and his bandmates in Crosby, Stills & Nash.
The acoustic-driven shows at Shoreline Amphitheatre benefit the Bridge School, which Young and his wife Pegi founded as a learning facility for severely disabled children.
As is custom, Young offered the first music of each day during a short set that featured "Sugar Mountain," "Mother Earth" and "Comes a Time," on which he was joined by his wife on vocals and two Native American dancers. Likewise, CSNY ended both shows, inviting all of the other artists on stage for a group rendition of "Teach Your Children." The group also performed songs from its members' storied careers, including Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" and Young's solo cuts "Human Highway" and "Harvest Moon."
"That kind of caring and family connection helped make the 17th annual Bridge benefit the kinder, gentler rock concert and, inevitably, the feel-good show of the year. From young groups such as Dashboard Confessional, Wilco, Incubus and Counting Crows acting humble and deferential, grateful simply to have been included, to old Bridge concert hands Pearl Jam, Indigo Girls, Willie Nelson and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, every single half-hour performance was sculpted for the setting and the purpose. Neil Young established the tone from the start Saturday when he walked onstage for his three-song solo opener at the beginning of the concert and gave his wife a kiss after she introduced him.

Artist Biography - Bridge School Benefit
|
Pearl Jam went right to the heart of it, starting by Eddie Vedder and the band's two guitarists, Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, unleashing a snarling, enunciated version of Bob Dylan's 'Masters of War.' Vedder tacked a quote from Young's 'Hey Hey My My' on the end of Pearl Jam's own 'Daughter,' by which time the rest of the band joined them. The group played a new song ('Man of the Hour'), covered the Ramones' little-known 'I Believe in Miracles' and Johnny Cash's '25 Minutes to Go,' and then turned and performed the band's flukey 1999 hit to the Bridge honor student. In a short span of songs, the band made a powerful, sweeping statement and, with Vedder getting personal with the kids, made it all real. "
The 18th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert was held on October 23rd (Saturday) and 24th (Sunday), 2004 at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA.
Here's the finale Sunday 10/24, 2004 lineup:

This yearly extravaganza supports Hillsborough's Bridge School, a nonprofit that aids children with severe speech and physical impairments. The two-day affair happens at Shoreline and attracts 25,000 music lovers.
For the first time since 1991's "MTV Unplugged," Sir Paul McCartney will be playing an all-acoustic set. In addition to Beatles' classics, look for a possible collaboration with event-organizer Young, who traditionally jams with performers throughout the day. The crooner who left his ticker in San Francisco, Tony Bennett, is also slated to appear, as are heavies like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ben Harper and Sonic Youth. Twin sisters Tegan and Sara will exhibit the punk-folk sound that got them inked to Young's Vapor Records, while Texas brothers Los Lonely Boys will illustrate why Willie Nelson wanted to appear on their self-titled debut.
