After an impressive track record, Doroftei turned professional and joined the Canadian club Interbox. He beat Argentinean boxer Raul Horacio Balbi 112-115, 114-113, and 115-112 in a split decision on January 5, 2002 and became the WBA world lightweight champion. If anybody had even the slightest doubt about Doroftei's victory over Balbi, then the doubts were cleared when the two met again in Bucharest. On May 31st Doroftei beat the Argentinean 118-111, 117-112 and 118-110. A fight for lightweight title unification with American boxer Paul Spadafora, the IBF champion, held on May 17, 2003 ended in a draw, 114-114, 115-113, and 114-115. He was one of the bright stars of professional boxing and everybody was shocked as he announced his retirement. His last match was supposed to be on October 24, 2003, against Panamanian boxer Miguel Callist. Doroftei had said that whatever be the outcome of the match, he would bid goodbye to professional boxing. However the match was canceled after Doroftei went past the upper limit weight for lightweights at the weigh-in: he was 4? lb (1.9 kg) over the 135 lb (61.2 kg) weight limit, so he lost his WBA title. In 2004 he was knocked out in two rounds by Arturo Gatti in the interim WBC title, hence he lost his undefeated mark.
After retirement he is working as a trainer for boxing aspirants, and it is thought that he might return to Montreal as a trainer for Interbox.
