By seizing the U.S. Junior Championships at 132 lbs., he became the youngest fighter ever to win the U.S. Championships. This solidified his position as one of the premier amateur fighters in the world. In 1995, he was selected to the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team. But he lost a controversial decision in the second round of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics because of the Olympic scoring system. Vargas was scheduled to turn pro on November of 1996, but while training for the bout he broke his right hand. But this didn't deterred him, Vargas followed his physical therapy program intensely, and within five months he was ready for his professional debut with Jorge Morales a veteran of 33 bouts. He defeated him in just 56 seconds and immediately a star was born. In 1998 Vargas won his first world title by knocking Yori Boy Campas, and thus becoming the youngest champion in the junior middleweight division's history.

The Nevada Athletic Commission imposed fine of $100,000 and Vergas was suspended (on November 20 of 2002) for nine months because of his use of steroids. Vargas said the steroids were given to him without his knowledge, nevertheless he accepted the responsibility. He returned to the ring on July 26, 2003, and defeated WBC #1 ranked junior middleweight contender Fitz Vanderpool to earn a sixth round stoppage .
