The UFC began as a single-event tournament that included some of the best fighters in the world, without regards to fighting style, height, or weight. The idea for the tournament came from Art Davie. The advertising executive was researching martial arts for a client in 1991 when he discovered the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school ran by Rorion Gracie. It became a hit on cable, moving away from the pay-per-view specials that had earlier sustained its national audience.
