 He fought on the first episode of HBO Boxing's spin-off series HBO Boxing After Dark on February 6, 1996. During the match former and future world champion Kennedy McKinney initially dropped him, but he rose off the floor to drop McKinney five times and keep the title by a knockout in round twelve. After that he went on a rampage and defeated former world champions Jesse Benavides and Orlando Fernandez but was stopped in his track by Junior Jones. He came face to face with Jones in a rematch on April 18, 1997 in Las Vegas, but again was defeated by Jones. After the match he bid goodbye to boxing for a short period. A year later he was back in the ring, and started off by defeating Angel Rosario, by a knockout in round five, and went on to win two more bouts. He got an opportunity to try for the world title and on October 31, he defeated Richie Wenton to become the World Featherweight Champion for the second time. In 2000, he came face to face with WBC's World Super Bantamweight Champion Erik Morales, at Las Vegas. The fight between the two was Okayed by WBO as a unification match but the WBC did not. The fight was called the "Fight of the Year" for the year 2000 by Ring magazine, in which, Barrera was defeated after a close split decision. WBO declared Morales to be their world champion, but in an unexampled move in boxing history, the WBO resolved that in their eyes it was unjustified for Barrera to have lost that fight, ignoring the judges decision, the organization declared Barrera as their World Super Bantamweight Champion. He again set off on a winning spree but was halted by previous WBC World Flyweight and then IBF Super Bantamweight champion Manny Pacquiao, in San Antonio, Texas on November 7. After the fight, many thought that Barrera's career was over but he proved his critics wrong by defeating former two-time World Bantamweight champion Paulie Ayala in Los Angeles in 2004. Barrera could not defend his WBC Super Featherweight title from fellow Mexican Juan Manuel Márquez on March 17, 2007.
