 Like his amateur career, Lewis' professional career too is replete with wins and achievements. He started off by winning the European heavyweight title towards the end of 1990, and then within a few months took the British heavyweight title, and then the Commonwealth title in April 1992. The same year after winning the Commonwealth title Lewis knocked out Canada's Donovan "Razor" Ruddock in two rounds for the No. 1 contenders' place in the WBC world rankings. After Evander Holyfield, declined to fight Lewis, his WBC title was declared vacant, so on January 14, 1993, the WBC announced Lewis its champion. He hence became the first world heavyweight titleholder from Britain in the 20th century. He retained the title thrice by defeating Tony Tucker, Phil Jackson and Frank Bruno; ultimately Oliver McCall defeated him on September 24, 1994. The match between Lewis and McCall, for the vacant WBC title in 1997 in Las Vegas had a bizarre end. After the third round McCall refused to box and in reality began to cry in the ring, forcing the referee to stop the fight and award Lewis the victory. Lewis defended his WBC world title successfully after knocking out linear champion Shannon Briggs in five rounds. He continued with his winning march and defended his title successfully before being knocked out by 20-to-1 underdog Hasim Rahman in a bout in South Africa in 2001. His match with Tyson on June 8, 2002, was the most anticipated match, in which he knocked out Tyson. His final match was with Klitschko that he did win but after that he bade goodbye to boxing to pursue interests such as, sports management and music promotion.
