 He started his boxing career as an amateur where he had some 210 fights. He was the winner of the 1999 National PAL amateur champion, the 1998 U.S. National amateur champion, and the 1998 National PAL amateur champion. It was only on 2 February 2001, when Jeff Lacy made his professional debut against Jerald Lowe, where he knocked him out in the very first round. With seven fights by way of knockout, he won the WBC Continental Americas Super Middleweight Title against Anwar Oshana. In 2003, he also won the USBA and NABA Super Middleweight Titles. In 2004, he won the IBF Super Middleweight Title.
During the late 2005, due to severe hand injury, his boxing career graph suffered a bit in the process. There were even times, when Jeff Lacy had to slow down to make sure that he would not over train. He suffered the first loss of his career on March 5, 2006 in a match against Joe Calzaghe, held at the MEN Arena in Manchester. On the way of becoming one of the brightest stars in boxing, this defeat at the hands of Joe Calzaghe put his future career into doubt. But, this defeat had a detrimental impact on his confidence and prospects. And he began to start his career with a new hope and motive. On December 2, 2006 he faced Vitali Tsypko in Tampa, Florida. This time he looked far from convincing and won the match by 96-94, 96-94 and 95-95.
