Corrales Vs. Castillo:
On May 7, 2005, Corrales defeated José Luis Castillo for the WBC lightweight title in the tenth round. The fight is universally regarded as the best fight of 2005. The referee Tony Weeks deducted a point from Corrales for spitting and then pinning Castillo against ropes. It was debated that Corrales was given too much time to recover during the point deduction and that Weeks did not give a fair chance for Castillo to recover. After six rounds, Castillo seemed to be taking over as he was clearly out landing and slowing down the too brave for his own good Corrales. Both fighters were head-to-head the whole fight and it started heating up again in the ninth round.

2006 Season Preview

 Castillo was cautioned by Weeks for straying south of the border. However, later in the round with both men exchanging punches, Castillo took a half step back and then sank a wicked left hook directly off of Corrales' cup. At the 2:34 mark of the 10th, Castillo stepped inside and nailed Corrales with a lead left hook to the jaw. Castillo knocked down Corrales twice. Corrales rolled over on his right hip and he managed to make it to one knee at the count of six. He stood at the count of nine. With 1:35 to go in the 10th, Corrales drilled him with a riveting right hand dead on the chin. Castillo attempted to bounce up and down but there was nothing left in his body. Boxing's long shot Diego Corrales climbed off the canvas twice and exited the arena a winner. It definitely became an instant classic as the two lightweight champions bravely fought toe-to-toe for 10 incredible rounds.
The Castillo and Corrales rematch occurred on October 8, 2005. Castillo weighed 3 ½ pounds over the 135 lightweight limit, making the fight a non-title bout. Castillo landed a left hook on the chin early in the fourth round, flooring Corrales, and scoring a win. Later, Castillo was accused of purposely not making weight, as it gave him an extra advantage to knockout Corrales. Corrales vs. Castillo III had been scheduled for February 4, 2006, but it was postponed because of Corrales' rib injury. The fight was rescheduled for June 3, 2006. At the weigh-in, however, Corrales weighed the 135 lb lightweight limit whereas Castillo weighed 139½ lb—causing the fight to be cancelled.
