The idea for putting Bounce on the stage has been with Sondheim for quite some time- in fact he had been toying with the idea since about 1953 and even Irving Berlin considered bringing it to the stage. The story revolves around the wild and wonderful lives of the Mizner brothers in the 1800s and follows them through their rollercoaster schemes that always end up coming down, no matter how high up they go. The story begins with the end- we meet the Mizner brothers as they ascend to heaven. Addison has died while trying to hide from the effects of a failed real estate boom. Wilson has died from a heart attack- he was a screen writer at the time of his death. Both brothers bear a lot of animosity towards each other, especially Addison for Wilson as the latter has always had a habit of coming in to gum up the works at the last minute.

The audience is then taken backwards- we watch the young brothers head for the Yukon where they look for gold. Unfortunately, while Addison is busy digging, Wilson has gambled away their claim. After being saved from death by a saloon girl, we follow Addison as he circles the world, acquiring a great number of strange things from a string of failed businesses. The action soon shifts to New York and then Florida with more crooked schemes, lovers and betrayals littering the way.
