Bon Jovi takes the name of its lead singer, Jon Bon Jovi, but also has Richie Sambora on guitar, David Bryan on keyboard, and Tico Torres on drums. The band formed after a song recorded by Jon Bon Jovi was featured on a local radio station and took off. Bon Jovi collected the talent that formed the band and they received a record deal with Mercury Records in 1984. Bon Jovi released their self-titled album the same year and sold millions of albums. The second album, 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit, performed similarly, leaving the band somewhere between successful and a headliner. The break came with the release of their third album, Slippery When Wet, in 1986. Bon Jovi catapulted up the charts and was headlining the "Monsters of Rock" festival in Britain on the strength of an album that sold over 26 million copies. Bon Jovi closed out the decade with the extremely successful New Jersey and began their pattern of breaks between albums. Jon Bon Jovi pursued acting and solo albums and the rest band pursued projects of their own. Bon Jovi returned in the ‘90s to find the music landscape changed from big hair and monster ballads to more blues-oriented guitar rifts and toned-down looks. They made the transition successfully, and released two albums, Keep the Faith and These Days, in the decade, both of which sold over 10 million copies. They ended the decade on a similar note as the ‘80s, on a break that allowed Jon to pursue acting and solo albums and various albums by the rest of the band members. The 21st century has been kind to Bon Jovi, but the only smash hit success of the decade has been Crush, which sold over 11 million copies. The band has found much success and buzz in their tours that the other three releases.
