He has collaborations with some of the famous names like David Sanborn, Marcus Miller, Maynard Ferguson, Nathan East, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Boney James, George Duke, Lenny Castro, James Genus, Rick Braun, Kirk Whalum, Harvey Mason, Billy Kilson, Lee Ritenour and his own daughter, Hilary James.Besides a very successful solo career, he has been the founder member of the FourPlay. The other members of Fourplay are Carlton, East and Mason.

Bob James was born on 25th December 1939 in Marshall, Montana, U.S.A. He was always influenced by Pop and Movie music. He has often featured R & B soloists, so that he can give a jazz touch to an instrumental pop set. James recorded boppish trio set for Mercury in 1962 and after some years his album ESP was a success as it used electronic tapes for producing effects.

He was with Sarah Vaughn for a period from 1965-68 and then he started working as a studio musician and later he was arranging and working on the post of producer for CTI. In 1974 he got a chance to record his purely commercial effort as a leader; later he was making big selling albums for his own Tappen Zee Label, and also for Columbia and Warner Bros. he also had collaborations with Earl Klugh and David Sanborn.

In 1976, he recorded his most popular set with UK soul fans with "Three". This set featured ‘Women of Ireland' and also his most remembered hit ‘Westchester Lady'. Further in 1976 he collaborated with his daughter, Hilary, for his album ‘Flesh and Blood'. He is currently busy touring different places with jazz quartet ‘FourPlay'. He has always been a master of his work and will be remembered for his contributions to jazz and soul music.
