The nature of success for a Broadway musical has remained quite the same since the advent of film. First, a show makes to Broadway and sells out, quickly recouping the producers’ investment. Then a national tour is launched. In the post-Lion King world of big budget theater this means that the Broadway show and the tour run concurrently. Add a West End run and then all this leads to a big budget production of a different kind, the kind that graces the silver screen. War Horse quickly concluded along these lines, but it now has Broadway brethren (or perhaps a cousin, since War Horse conquered the London before crossing the Atlantic) in the Rock of Ages.
Yes, the Rock of Ages debuted recently and appears to be the second sign of Tom Cruise’s return to legitimacy as a movie star (the first being Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol). Now, in addition to the option to purchase Rock of Ages tickets for the Broadway production at Hayes Theatre, the West End production at the Shaftesbury Theatre, and the second national tour, fans of the 1980s rock, musical theater, and star studded casts will be able to rock out in air conditioned movieplexes across the nation come June 1, 2012.
While, it is important Broadway brag about the superiority of a live show, it is difficult to be underwhelmed by this cast. Diego Boneta and Julianne Hough play the protagonists and star-crossed lovers Drew Boley and Sherrie Christian. They are not he draw though. Rather it is Tom Cruise as cocky, ridiculous Stacee Jaxx, Alec Baldwin as aging rock venue owner Dennis, Russell Brand as Lonnie, Bryan Cranston as the Mayor of Los Angeles, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the Mayor’s wife and rock concert antagonist, and Paul Giamatti as Jaxx’s manager that will bring in the crowds.
It appears the film took liberties with the plot, nixing the German investors and going the anti-fun league route. This is not necessarily disconcerting, but at least offers a slight deviation from the live stage version.
Ok, so here is the scary thing. I do not know which version I am going to prefer. Rock of Ages takes on rock and roll during the stadium glam rock era, so perhaps the story will play out better on a big screen. Certainly Cruise has demonstrated he can capture an over-the-top character like Stacee Jaxx. Add Alec Baldwin being Alec Baldwin and is difficult to hate on the Hollywood adaptation.
Kate Hudson turned 30 this weekend and in true celebrity fashion had a party filled with celebrities. Some of the A – listers at the party included the Kutchers (Ashton and Demi), Jessica Alba and hubby Cash Warren, Gwyneth Paltrow and hubby Chris Martin from Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, Evan Mendes, Adam Sandler, Zach Braff, Gwen Stefani and Cher. The party was at mom, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s home and it was a night of dancing and drinking and fun. If you were wondering, Owen Wilson was not at the party…hmmm…are the couple on again or off again? Speaking of parties, Andy Roddick and his model girlfriend tied the knot this weekend with 250 of their closest friends sharing in the event. The couple had an outdoor wedding ceremony and then dinner at the country club on Friday. Elton John entertained the guests while they dined. Saturday the couple and their friends partied at Stubb’s which specializes in BBQ. The guests were requested to wear “denim only” and rocked the night away with the Spazmatics.
Madonna had another horse riding accident on Saturday. Luckily her injuries were minor and after a visit to the hospital was released with some bruises. It seems that the paparazzi were the cause of the accident when they jumped out to photograph Madonna and they startled her horse. She was much luckier this time then when she fell off her horse back in 2005 and cracked several ribs and broke her collarbone. Glad you are going to be alright Madonna.
Perez Hilton sure does know how to stir up trouble. The most recent non – Perez Hilton fan, seems to be Criss Angel. It got a bit tense and ugly at the end of his magic show in Las Vegas on Friday night where Perez happened to be in the audience. Criss acknowledged Perez by giving him a shout and saying, “I have to recognize someone special here in the house. Perez Hilton, please stand up…We have the world’s biggest douche bag asshole in the house.” Wow – that was not exactly a warm welcome. Perez responded with, “thanks for the free tickets.” What started the war of words? It seems that Perez was Twittering through the show and not giving the show a very good review. In fact two tweets read, “unbelievably BAD!” and “I would rather be getting a root canal.” Hmmm… I guess I would have to say Perez may have had it coming.
And last but not least a Happy Birthday to Suri Cruise, daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who just turned 3. And believe it or not it seems like Suri had a typical 3 year old party with a few of her friends and a Belle princess cake from Beauty and the Beast. Suri will be starting full time preschool classes at the school of Scientology. Suri will be attending classes 5 days a week for a mere $12,000. The do like to start them early over there.
How sweet are the President and First Lady who headed back to Chicago for Valentine’s Day? The two dined at Chicago’s TABLE Fifty – Two where dinner was prepared by Chef, Art Smith. The couple dined on crispy catfish and pistachio chicken, and they may have even snuck in a piece of gooey crunchy pecan pie. It seems that in order to stay in touch with friends and keep the family grounded the First Family plans to fly home about every 6 weeks to Chicago. Hmmm… I wonder who pays for those trips home on Air Force One. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy for the love birds to have a romantic dinner together in their home town, and I love the Obama’s, I was just curious.
So did cupid’s arrow hit Katy Perry and Benji Madden this past Valentine’s Day? IT seems that the couple was spotted getting pretty cozy after Katy’s show at the Hard Rock Hotel’s Wasted Space. Hmmm…I wonder what Paris Hilton was up to last night? Stay tuned to see if there might be more to this budding romance.
Although he wasn’t sharing the specifics, Tom Cruise was feeling the love while he shared that he had something very special planned for his wife this Valentine’s Day. In fact he shared that news 3 weeks ago at his premier for his new movie, Valkyire. I just can’t wait to hear what he did for Katie. As soon as I hear anything I will be sure to share. And then Jessica Simpson was finally all smiles after a difficult few weeks. She had her #1 man, Tony Romo, in the audience at her Valentine’s Day show in Rochester, NY, and on several occasions she gave him a few, I Love You shout outs. Good for you Jess!
